Ford’s excuse for not getting the car here sooner was always that exchange rates made its entry price prohibitive, but not a lot has changed on that front. However, with an increasing number of small hatches sourced from Europe on the market, Ford now claims there is a place for premium priced quality European products – products that appeal to a different sort of buyer to those looking for affordable everyday transport.

You get plenty of equipment: driver’s airbag, CD player, air-conditioning, front fog lamps, power windows and mirrors, and key less remote central locking. But there’s value beyond the standard equipment list.

The Elantra is really very roomy. Not only do you buy a very large boot, but you get excellent interior space, too. Rear leg room is plentiful (but foot room isn’t) and all but the tallest of passengers will find comfortable spot in the back for that annual journey to hell-at-the-relatives.

But it ain’t all roses. As you point the car in the direction of the mother-in-law’s, memories of the Accent come gushing back. The Elantra’s clutch is completely devoid of any feel – there isn’t a clearly defined take-up point, just a dead pedal. Neighbors will reckon you’ve been sampling the bubbly a little too early in the morning as you jump through the neighborhood. The only alternative is to rev the engine so hard the EPA is bound to make a visit.

If somehow you get the action of clutch and throttle synchronized, you’ll find even more Accent. The gear change quality is very rare, in that it’s possible to crunch the shift in all five slots. The first-second and second-third shifts are worst, particularly if your trying to gently swap cogs. And the gap in revs between first and second gears is very large, which can be problematic. On a hot day with the air-conditioning working overtime and a load on board, the Elantra struggles to hold second on steeper inclines.

It isn’t the engine’s fault; the twin-cam 2.0 litre four is a willing power plant. It gets a bit noisy when revved, but it’s a mid-range engine anyway. Changing up at 4000rpm gives strong forward momentum, while delivering reasonable fuel consumption.

The Hyundai Elantra’s suspension carries a little of that trademark Hyundai softness, but it’s a supple, controlled body roller rather than a nasty nose scraper. Bumps are absorbed quite gently, although the front suspension feels a little coarse. It’s at home on the freeway, where the car tracks straight but wants for slightly more sophisticated aerodynamics.

The standard safety package is acceptable; driver’s front airbag, five head restraints and height-adjustable front seat belts with tensioners. If you want more, you’ll need the extra safety pack, which includes passenger airbag and ABS. And we’re happy to say the center-rear seat passenger also gets a lap/sash seat-belt.

The Elantra is a competent, capable motor. It isn’t inspiring or exciting, but if you’re after a spacious everyday car and can live with a few automotive indiscretions, you won’t be disappointed.

Add to this a weight saving of around 37kg on all models, and it’s easy to see where the extra performance has come from. Factory testing suggests a 0-100km/h time of 9.1 seconds.

Corolla’s new body is also more aerodynamic, which, along with the lighter weight and new engine, decrease fuel consumption by an average of 10-15 percent across the range.

Driving dynamics should also benefit from Celica hand-me-downs. It shares the same 2600mm wheelbase, as well as front and rear suspension basics. The MacPherson strut front suspension has been altered for better steering response, while changes to the damping and the addition of a front stabilizer bar should control body roll better in corners.

The rear suspension is a trailing torsion beam axle, which Toyota chose to save weight and reduce intrusion into the body. An inherent advantage of the torsion beam setup is reduced camber changes during cornering, which means more rear grip.

My first impression of the vehicle can be summed up in one word: Big. Once I got over my fear of heights I began to appreciate the great traffic visibility the Patrol offers around town and – more importantly – the ability to drive over the large rocks found in the Quarry in Clondalkin which is a suburb of Dublin before taking it on a trip across the mountains and rivers of Ireland.

The interior of the Nissan Patrol is well laid out. I particularly loved the versatility of the folding rear seats, leaving more space for the large amount of gear needed for a trip through the bog.

Despite the fact that the Patrol’s 4.2 litre six cylinder engine is turbocharged, the Patrol is certainly not about to drag anyone off at the lights, though it’s got sufficient grunt to keep up with life in the suburbs.

One minor point that did annoy me towards the end of our 400km trip was the optional aluminum bull-bar’s habit of catching the sunlight and throwing it in the driver’s face. Nothing that a bit of gaffer tape wouldn’t fix – or you could buy the black bull bar instead.

That and the lack of lumbar support in the passenger seat were the only real – but very minor – criticisms of the Nissan Patrol.

The capabilities of the vehicle far exceeded my expectations. Whether I was driving the Patrol through, mud, sand, over rocks or in the rain it did everything I asked with ease.

But I still believe there’s no real need for a ‘truck’ like the Patrol if you’re never venturing beyond the city limits. Go on, try it on a drive and let the Patrol show you what it’s capable of. You ll probably love it.
